Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that typically affects an arm or a leg, usually after an injury, surgery, or stroke. At Southern Coast Spine & Pain Specialists, we understand how debilitating CRPS can be and are dedicated to providing effective, personalized treatment options that can help manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
What Is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)?
CRPS is a condition characterized by prolonged and excessive pain in a limb, often accompanied by changes in skin color, temperature, and swelling in the affected area. The pain is typically out of proportion to the severity of the initial injury, and it may continue long after the injury has healed. There are two types of CRPS:
Type 1: Occurs without a confirmed nerve injury (previously called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or RSD).
Type 2: Occurs with a confirmed nerve injury (previously called Causalgia).
The exact cause of CRPS is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to abnormal functioning of the nervous system in response to injury or trauma.
